29.6.08

it's been (5) days since my kids arrived - and it's been a busy almost-week.

this is the nice part of camp, when you've established rules and boundaries, and finally feel like you're no longer living with (12) little strangers - while not being sick of them. yet.

today was a lovely lazy sunday - roll-in breakfast, home-made donuts, "non-denominational" chapel service. i taught cooking class in the afternoon to (6) 10 year olds - we made cupcakes and frosting, and i nearly had a finger bitten off from offering an icing bowl up for licking-out.

now, i am enjoying an illicit diet coke on infirmary duty while the sounds of shrieking little girls waft across the cool night air . . .

laminaria

changed my mind. doing laminaria from spring 08 knitty, with this gorgeous yarn from etsy knittinpretty.

it's 100% soysilk, which i've never worked with before, hand-spun and hand-dyed in reds, oranges and purples; hard to find lace-weight yarn in such deep saturated colors.

on its way to the ol'wav soon!

23.6.08

my new camera came today!
so, i celebrated with a proper w_r!!

top is with flash on, the bottom, without, and doctored exposure.
camp brings the prep - this is the most amount of time i have gone without skirts or dresses in a long long long time. there's something very nice about dressing in such a way while living in coastal maine - very satisfying. and the 50s and 60s in new england are very inspiring.

the kennedys, circa 1954. love jackie's high-waisted capris and john's converses.

desert seascape

the new knitty has been up for a little bit, and while most of the patterns don't really appeal to me, this one caught my eye. adam and i may be living in the desert next year, which forces a shift from knitting montreal-appropriate items.

i'm thinking about a gorgeous blue or green silk laceweight yarn for this - knitting lace scarves are some of my favorites! the yardage is so few that nice yarn is affordable, and it always fits.

a quick etsy search turns up some glorious choices, a soy lace-weight dyed in "sea-glass" or a silk/cashmere blend in "oceanic gaia", both by dragonflyfiberdesign.

mission statement

i feel as if i have lots of ideas and lots of inspiration for this blog - an amalgamation of different themes - but they will come and go as my life focuses on one or the other.

i read a number of blogs focusing on varied subjects - personal style, cooking, knitting, travel - even body modification blogs. and these are all such things that i love - how could i possibly pick just one for this journal?

my day-to-day life does not revolve around one focal point - at least not usually. i am one of those people who are gifted/cursed with short bursts of enthusiasm. starting and continuing a new venture - be it wardrobe_remix, vegan cooking, tattoo research or knitting projects - comes naturally and quickly, and it feels great. finishing on the other hand . . . having a specialized blog, for me, would prove to be a short-lasting endeavor.

while one subject of interest may dominate at one time, i envision this blogging project [which i hope hope hope continues well! i may have to be more disciplined - comment to keep me going!] to be a reflection of my daily life. at the time, i'm living at summer camp - so being outdoors on trip and telling you wacky stories about my kids is the highlight.

in a couple of months, i hope to move the focus to more of a life blog - highlighting clothing and personal style, knitting projects, mine and adam's cooking and our adventures abroad - keeping in touch with our friends and family and contributing to different online communities.

busy busy busy!

so, i have noticed that i just love to repeat words thrice over . . .

it's been a busy couple of days. we returned victorious from our staff trip, against fog and tides and wind. i had forgotten how GOOD it feels to paddle - i love absolutely everything about it, sitting above the water, feathering my paddle, racing around lobster buoys, riding waves, watching the fog roll away . . . just not solo-portaging.

a few excerpts

river-lunch on the first day

fog on the second day

who knew lobstermen had such a great sense of humor?

the closest i've come to wardrobe_remix in a couple of months. wilderness-chic.

maine-ho!

i just got my assignment for camp trips - had to wrangle a bit but it was worth it.
i'm leading a five-day canoe trip on moosehead lake in northern maine. this is the first year this trip has been run at camp and i'm very excited to test-run the itinerary.

finally . . .

watching bridget jones with a bunch of ladies - nearest man is at least a couple of miles away
welcome to all-girls-camp!

very excited to announce new new new camera! did the whole indecisive, hours of research over a relatively small matter, because OH LORD what if i missed a 20$ SLR camera that was a total secret only found through googling?!

settled on the fujifilm finepix j10 8.2 megapixels - which, really means very little to me. we'll see whether opting out of AA batteries was a bad decision or not.

i really got into the habit of doing wardrobe_remix everyday and having my camera take a swan dive threw me for a loop. it'd be nice to take daily outfits again, even if it is only camp garb . . . malory asked me why i wear a keffiyah yesterday . . .

wet hot

back at camp.
forgot how fluid and relative time is here.
i've only been back for a solid 24 hours and it feels like weeks . . .

testing??!
