29.12.08

worn.

cut my hair very very short in april, right after i had (2) chest tattoos done. it was a couple of very drastic physical changes in short time, and left me looking quizzically into the mirror for a couple of weeks.

having short hair was great - it dried on its own, didn't have to worry about pins and elastics or straighting - but i prefer something a little longer. the growing-out front is going well, but we have reached an awkward stage.

thank you cat for the br gift certificate! i love this cardigan.

scarf: h+m
earrings: banana republic
cardigan: banana republic
tshirt: jcrew
skirt: aa
leggins: llbean

26.12.08

what i wore today.

headband: tortoise-shell, mystery
turtleneck : banana republic, outlet
necklace : h+m
skirt: thrifted, hemmed
underskirt: thrifted, vintage french school uniform
leggings: llbean silkweight long underwear
shoes: black patent-leather t-bars, target

llbean long underwear = saving grace in winter. looks like shiny tights, insulates like a muvfabitch.

angry-face is due to a "check-engine" light that will. not. disappear. blergh.

9.23.08, tuesday

planning a frolick through london's yarn shops today. first, loop gb at islington/angel, and then the handweavers studio & gallery, way up at blackhorse tube. i have some pictures to show you guys anyway of laminaria and button-purchases so will make one lovely yarn post later today.

scarf: simons, mtl.
cardigan: target
(invisible) tshirt : grey vneck ralph lauren, thrift, maine
skirt : thrift, maine
leggins: primark
bangles: primark
shoes: uo, sale

these shoes have been a godsend. i'm pretty sure they were with me in finland a couple of years ago - they have taken a massive beating over three? years, and are still holding in there.

also, i am deeply in love with stirrup leggings. LOVE.

original here.

stay tuned later today for more pictures of wales than you ever wanted to see . . .

9.19.08

god, how is it the 19th already? time flies.

today i wore this.

dress: american apparel. it's much more purple-y than in that picture, but for whatever reason, the color doesn't photograph well.
necklace : flea market
belt : thrift
tights : spanx, with many holes from being wore continually for like five months straight last winter.
shoes : target

game plan : sample the delectable-looking curry house under the apartment for £4.95 buffet - jaunt up to portobello road, with a detour to urban outfitters to buy £8 sneakers because adam and i are taking a drive to WALES this weekend! pray for us.

9.17.08, wednesday

scarf: h+m
shirt : h+m
belt : thrifted
skirt : thrifted
tights : h+m
shoes : primark
bracelets : primark

plus black cardigan, target, not in picture.
all re-mixed, save shoes and bracelets.

this picture is funny to me because i generally think i am way way taller than the actuality. like, if you asked me to show you someone with an equivalent height, i'd eyeball like a 5'6"/7" woman. i think i'm as tall as adam sometimes.

BUT as reality shows, i am a head above the ironing board. awesome. i'm a secret tall girl trapped in a 5'2" frame! ahhh!

anyway, other than having existential height crises, i realize i haven't been posting a lot, or any, really, wardrobe pictures - there are a few reasons for such.

1. i live out of a backpack, ergo
2. i wear the same five outfits repeatedly, which is

3. vaguely boring to me, so i'm not inclined to share with the interwebs.

anyway. here is today. it is cloudy and brisk outside here [surprise], so the wool skirt is in order.

p.s. primark is the poor [british] man's clothes section of target. it smells like what i imagine a sweatshop does, but it's cheap by american standards. hot damn.

p.p.s. this post also features a corner of the lovely emma's lovely spare room - where we are camping out hobo-style.

pardon the wacky facial expression. something in my genes prevents me from ever looking normal in a picture - compounded with being naturally not photogenic, results range from weird stare-downs to bemused faces.

i found this skirt in the deep recesses of my closet. it's probably from high school . . . ?

scarf : h+m
shirt : j.crew
skirt : target
shoes : forever 21

this outfit makes me feel like a sicilian pirate - it's those red/white stripes with gladiators! i had originally wanted to write my honors thesis on ancient piracy in the mediterranean, but this will have to do instead.

benevolence of thrift gods

COMPLETELY struck out at the flea market yesterday . . .

but all was turned around when the bath, me goodwill came through with (2) complete outfits. yee-haw! i was so pumped.

shorts : thrifted, bright! orange linen
belt :thrifted, brown braided leather
shirt : thrifted, ralph lauren
scarf : thrifted

[invisible] shoes : thrifted, topsiders

this is my first 100% thrifted outfit and it feels so good . . . it's taken me quite a while to get to that point, where i own enough thrifted clothes to pull together entire outfits. thrift shopping is so different from regular stores, where you don't go in looking for a particular piece, but trust in the serendipitous and fickle nature of thrift deities . . .

16.7.08

as they say in minnesota, uff-da. it's hot today.

i've been running around on a day off from camp, thrust back into the real world of banking and doctor appointments and intarwebs and, honestly, i think skirts are the most comfortable and classy way to live.

they're perfect in the winter with tights on, and in the 80 degree weather summer [i know, i know, we're lucky in maine with no humidity and it never ever getting above 90] i am so much more cooler wearing a skirt or a dress than if i had on shorts or pants. my only beef with skirts is wearing shirts over the waistband, rather than tucked in as i am oft to do - i always find that the waistband is kind of bunchy and bumpy from underneath, where i prefer a smooth silhouette.

this skirt is one of my particular favorites - many a person has told me it looks like something their grandmother would wear, little do they know that is some high praise; grandmum chic is where it's at.

necklace : montsweag flea market, maine. i knocked a third strand off because i didn't like it.
shirt : j.crew, by way of maia's closet
skirt : value village, montreal. originally ankle length and buttoned all the way down, but i hemmed her right up.
shoes : old navy, montreal. on sale for $10! i like that they're vaguely greco-roman but not overly gladiator-esque.

on a maine thrifting note, i went to montsweag this morning for some flea-marketing and it was very disappointing . . . boo. off to goodwill this afternoon!

the top -- at camp for INDEPENDENCE DAY theme
the bottom -- at home, plus again today . . . oh summer, you relax so many social norms.

top

dress: winners, mtl - it was stashed in the formal-wear racks, in a completely different size section. fate? i'm sure of it.
scarf : simons, mtl. i'm not sure if the keffiyah look is in, out, dated, still hip; i dig this nonetheless.
cardigan : thrifted? i've had this for eons - and wear it almost everyday
belt : black, patent leather. from a secondhand shop in maine.

bottom

collie-dog got in the way

dress : . . . sister's closet . . . sorry maia!
cardigan : see above.
belt : thrifted, goodwill, maine

i'm back up to camp tomorrow morning bright and early -- goodbye real life!

29.6.08

it's been (5) days since my kids arrived - and it's been a busy almost-week.

this is the nice part of camp, when you've established rules and boundaries, and finally feel like you're no longer living with (12) little strangers - while not being sick of them. yet.

today was a lovely lazy sunday - roll-in breakfast, home-made donuts, "non-denominational" chapel service. i taught cooking class in the afternoon to (6) 10 year olds - we made cupcakes and frosting, and i nearly had a finger bitten off from offering an icing bowl up for licking-out.

now, i am enjoying an illicit diet coke on infirmary duty while the sounds of shrieking little girls waft across the cool night air . . .

scarf : simon's, mtl
sweater : thrift, mtl
shirt : camp, acquired
pants : lululemon, mtl
shoes : sperrys, thrift, maine

23.6.08

my new camera came today!
so, i celebrated with a proper w_r!!

top is with flash on, the bottom, without, and doctored exposure.
camp brings the prep - this is the most amount of time i have gone without skirts or dresses in a long long long time. there's something very nice about dressing in such a way while living in coastal maine - very satisfying. and the 50s and 60s in new england are very inspiring.

the kennedys, circa 1954. love jackie's high-waisted capris and john's converses.
